On most holes, players will face shots requiring at least one more club (hitting uphill) or at least one less club (downhill). “It’s something a lot of people don’t factor in,” Sargent adds about the award-winning Wolf Creek Golf Club. “When I play with people and we’re on, say the par-5 fifth, I may have 175 yards in and I’ll be hitting 4 iron. They’ll say I’m crazy to hit that much club. But then I point out that the green is at least 20 yards uphill. If the pin is in the back, that can add another 30-to-40 feet and that’s one or two more clubs for most people. The secret to playing well here is getting the ball to the hole. Most players will be short, leaving long putts."

Sargent’s advice: leave your ego in the bag and take another club if you’re hitting uphill. After all, just because Tiger can get home with a 4-iron doesn’t mean you can.
